Reviews
From the people who hired us
Nadia Zulaikha
Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur
"The Character Reading was unlike anything I expected. Siti spent almost two hours in my apartment, not just looking but listening to how I described the space. The report she wrote made me see my own home differently. We then went ahead with the full design package, and the result is genuinely the most settled I have ever felt in a place I have lived."

Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur
"We hired Raku Room for the renovation support on our terrace house in Bangsar. Ahmad was on site consistently and caught several things that the contractor was about to do wrong — not through confrontation, but by being there and knowing the design. The finished result looked like the drawings. That sounds obvious, but it is apparently rare."
February 2025 · Faithful Execution
Priya Lingam
Petaling Jaya, Selangor
"The design process took longer than I had originally hoped, but I understand now why. The material sourcing alone involved conversations I would never have had with another designer. The specification document they delivered at the end is something I actually reference — it tells me exactly what everything is and how to look after it."

Ahmad Mukhriz
Ampang, Kuala Lumpur
"We asked Raku Room to design the interior of our ceramics studio and they understood immediately what the space needed. Yi Wen's material knowledge was remarkable — she sourced local clay render for the walls that I had been looking for without success for over a year. The studio now feels like an extension of the work made inside it."

"We just wanted to understand our shophouse before we spent any money on it. The Character Reading was exactly right for that — Siti came, spent time, and sent us a document that told us things we did not know about our own building. We have since commissioned the full design. The pace has been entirely our own."
March 2025 · Character Reading
Rohani Sulaiman
Damansara Heights, KL
"My concern going in was that designers impose their own preferences. Raku Room did not do this. The design they proposed was clearly built from what I had described and what they had observed. There are things in my house now that I would not have chosen myself, but they chose them because they fit the space — and they were right."

Case Studies
Three projects in detail
Case Study 01 · Bangsar Terrace House
The Situation
A 1960s terrace house in Bangsar with original timber flooring and high ceilings. The client had owned it for four years without touching it, unsure what to keep and what to change.
What We Did
Character Reading followed by full Considered Design. We preserved the original floor and ceiling profile, opened a partition between the kitchen and rear garden, and specified locally sourced clay plaster for the living room walls.
The Result
A home that feels continuous with its own history. The client describes it as "the same house, but finally itself." Renovation took 10 weeks. The project was later featured in an architecture publication.
"The house feels like it was always meant to look this way." — Tan Kian Huat
Case Study 02 · Ceramics Studio, Ampang
The Situation
A ground-floor unit in Ampang being converted from storage into a working ceramics studio and occasional teaching space. The client needed the design to support both production and people.
What We Did
We separated the working and teaching zones while keeping visual connection between them. Natural lighting was maximised. Materials were specified to be robust but not clinical — local clay render, reclaimed timber shelving, unglazed floor tiles from Selangor.
The Result
A studio that participants comment on before they even start working. Classes are now fully subscribed. The material choices have developed a patina after a year of use that the client considers an asset.
"The studio feels like it belongs to the work made in it." — Ahmad Mukhriz
Case Study 03 · Tea Room, Chow Kit
The Situation
A narrow shophouse unit in Chow Kit being fitted out as a small tea room. The owners had a clear sense of atmosphere but no design experience, and a modest construction budget.
What We Did
We worked within the constraints of the space and the budget to specify materials that would develop well over time. The design proposal prioritised the back of the room — the part guests face once seated — and kept the front deliberately restrained.
The Result
A room that feels significantly larger than it is, and more considered than its cost would suggest. Fully open six months after completion. The owners have since recommended Raku Room to three other business owners in the neighbourhood.
"Our guests often ask who designed it." — Lee Wei Shan
